Small Grant Program
UCRN administered a small grant program during 2000-2005 with funding from the Andrew Mellon Foundation. Although the program has been discontinued, we provide information here on the many graduate students and junior faculty who were supported in this way. We place a high priority on finding other sources to bring a program like this back to life in the near future.

The following update is based on responses from people whom we were able to contact in summer 2012. Their career success is a delight for those of us who organized this program, helped select the recipients, and had several chances to meet recipients at UCRN conferences. We hope to regain contact with everyone.
- Guo Chen is Assistant Professor of Geography and Global Urban Studies Program at Michigan State University. Her recent publications include a special issue on Contesting Rights to the Chinese City with Environment and Planning A and a forthcoming edited volume on Right to the City in the Global South.
- Vincent Chen is Senior Lecturer in the School of East Asian Studies at the University of Sheffield.
- Wendy Chen is Assistant Professor in the Department of Geography, University of Hong Kong.
- Yu Cheng is Associate Professor in the School of Sociology and Anthropology, Sun Yat-Sen University, and also associate director of the Center for Migrant Health Policy.
- Yuan Cheng is Associate Professor in the Department of Social Management and Social Policy at Fudan University. He is currently a visiting scholar at Harvard University. Recent publications include studies of marriage, migration, air pollution, and population forecasting in China.
- Shiuh-Shen Chien is Associate Professor of Development Geography at National Taiwan University, and is the author of a number of articles on economic and political change in urban China.
- Laurie Duthie is working in the private sector as Staffing Manager for Greater China of Apple Retail.
- Yiping Fang is Assistant Professor in the Department of Planning at Portland State University. She has focused on issues of the development of the housing market in Chinese cities with a focus on the disadvantages of migrants and the process of privatization of the former public housing stock.
- Arianne Gaetano is Assistant Professor of Anthropology and Women's Studies at Auburn University, and she has published several studies on women and migration in urban China. Last summer she served as served as the Faculty Director of AU Abroad in China at East China Normal University in Shanghai.
- Shenjing He is Professor of Urban Geography and Planning, Sun Yat-Sen University, and also editor in China for Urban Studies.
- Chia Yin Hsu is Assistant Professor in the History Department at Portland State University.
- Xianbi Huang is Lecturer in Sociology at La Trobe University in Bundoora, Australia.
- William Hurst is moving to Northwestern University's Department of Political Science in January 2013 as Associate Professor.
- Zhang Jin is Professor of History and Associate Dean at Chongqing University, School of Literature and Journalism. Dr. Zhang was at Harvard University on a Fulbright Research Scholar Grant last year, and published a book in 2003 on Power, Conflict, and Reform: A Study of Chongqing's Urban Modernization, 1926-37.
- Limei Li is Research Assistant Professor at Hong Kong Baptist University, on leave from her permanent position at East China Normal University. She continues her research on various aspects of urban residential patterns.
- Wanxin Li is Assistant Professor at the City University of Hong Kong, and is working on environmental and social governance issues with a China focus. Recent publications include studies of environmental management, green growth, and environmental advocacy in China.
- Zhigang Li is Associate Professor in the School of Geography and Planning at Sun Yat-Sen University.
- Jiantao Lu completed his PhD at UCLA and is now in the Department of Urban and Regional Management, Peking University, where he continues research on foreign direct investment in urban
China.
- Xiaolong Luo is Professor in the Department of Urban Planning and Design & Research Centre of Human Geography, Nanjing University. His research interests are urban and regional governance, regionalization, urbanization, spatial planning. He has published a book on intercity cooperation and governance, and over 50 international and Chinese journal articles.
- Ben Read is Assistant Professor in the Politics Department, University of California, Santa Cruz . His book, Roots of the State: Neighborhood Organization and Social Networks in Beijing and Taipei, just came out with Stanford University Press.
- Yuan Ren is Professor of Demography and Urban Studies in the School of Social Development and Public Policy at Fudan University and also Vice-Director of the Center for Urban and Regional Studies. He focuses on issues of migrant social integration and published a book on this topic in January.
- Danny T. Wang is Assistant professor in the Department of Marketing, School of Business, at Hong Kong Baptist University. He spent one year as Economist in the Bank of China (Hong Kong), and now combines interests in Chinese urban development with work on issues of marketing.
- Jianwen Wei is Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology, Central University of Finance and Economics in Beijing.
- Qingwen Xu is Associate Professor at the Tulane University School of Social Work and has published several articles on migration, labor protest, and social networks in urban China.
- Danny Wang is Assistant Professor in the Department of Marketing at Hong Kong Baptist Univerisyt's School of Business.
- Min Yang, one of the first UCRN grantees in Fall 2000, earned her Ph.D from Tsinghua University in 2005 and now teaches in the Department of Sociology at Wuhan University.
- Xiaohua Ying is Associate Professor of Health Economics in the School of Public Health at Fudan University.
- Jin Zhang is Professor of Hisotry and Vice Dean at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Humanities and Social Sciences, Chongqing Univeristy.
- Chen Yu is Assistant Professor in the Department of Architecture, National University of Singapore, and has conducted research on treaty ports in China, overseas Chinese architecture, and urban regeneration in China.
- Zhou Yu is Assistant Professor in the Department of Family and Consumer Studies, University of Utah. He is conducting research on household formation among the post 1970 generation and the growing generational divide in China's urban housing market.
- Hongliang Henry Zhang is Assistant Professor in the Department of Eocnomics, The Chinese University of Hong Kong. His research interests include the labor economics, economics of education, development economics, and urban economics.
- Jin Zhang is Professor of History and Associate Dean in the School of Literature and Journalism at Chongqing University, and author of Power, Conflict, and Reform: A Study of Chongqing's Urban Modernization, 1926-37.
- Ying Zhang is Professor of Natural Resources Economics in the School of Economics and Management, Beijing Forestry University. In 2007-2008, he was a Fulbright visiting professor at Yale University. He has published a large number of articles and books dealing with his specialization in forest economics.
- Hao Zhou is Associate Professor, Department of Sociology, Peking University, and was recently a visiting scholar at the Institute of Social Research (ISR), University of Michigan. Dr. Zhou's principal principle research interest is the development (educational achievement, assimilation and psychological adjustment) of migrant children in China, and has recently received a new grant from the National Social Science Fund for new survey research on this topic.
- Xudong Zhao is Director and Professor, Institution of Anthropology at Renmin University of China.
- Yi Zhou is Professor of Sociology at Fudan University.
