Research Interests
Thomas Palmer's current research concentrates on the intersemiotic contextual misrepresentation of photojournalism in the formative frontier of online news publishing. His blog, Picture Prosecutor, immerses readers in this real-time research. The site's "cases" have successfully influenced some news organizations to redress this communication malpractice on their online platforms. As a media monitor and deconstructionist, his experience with multimodal forensics draws upon three-decades of news editing, photojournalism, picture editing and design directing in the news industry. His research and writing also focus on text-image relationships in multimodality theory, media literacy and social semiotics.
