Virginia Goatley Honored with Statewide Award for Service Leadership
Albany, NY (December 4, 2020) - Virginia Goatley, professor and chair of Literacy Teaching and Learning, is the 2020 recipient of the Charles C. Mackey, Jr. Excellence in Service Leadership Award, given by the New York Association of Colleges of Teacher Education. The Mackey Award honors an educator in New York who has exemplified the highest standards of service leadership in teacher education. She will be presented with the award at the NYSATE/NYACTE Board Meeting on December 10.

Dr. Virginia Goatley demonstrates extraordinary service to her students, to her institution, to K-12 and teacher education in New York State, to literacy research and instruction and to the education profession as a whole.
Her detailed, open-minded understandings of key issues, wisdom, deeply ethical practice, and courage to act, even in contentious times, reflect exemplary practice that has enabled countless others to reach their individual, institutional, and community goals.
Dr. Goatley has numerous examples of leadership where she has given wise counsel and mentoring and has fostered a culture of continuous learning and emphasis on supporting learning across contexts. She has led her colleagues through rapidly changing terrain, including moving programs online, addressing certification changes and the evolving demands of clinically rich teacher preparation and more. Her teaching of literacy instruction and research courses and her work with the Albany Teaching Center and schools across the region provide added evidence of her active promotion of the growth and development of P-12 students.
