GIS certificate courses give you first-hand experience using geospatial technologies along with associated artificial intelligence techniques and big data analysis to retrieve and process geographic information and present it in digital maps as well as other visual formats.

The five-course curriculum teaches you how to use geographic mapping technologies to:

  • Respond to urban emergencies
  • Track environmental change
  • Predict natural disasters
  • Identify emerging social issues
  • Study socioeconomic and market trends

By the end of the program, you’ll be ready to support mapping projects in natural resource management, agriculture, archeology, environmental protection, forestry, or urban planning.

Admission

To be admitted to the GIS certificate program, you must demonstrate your interest in using geographic data to support academic or professional work in social sciences, environmental studies, market research, or urban and regional planning.

International Students

This degree is designated as a STEM program. International students maintaining F-1 status are allowed to apply for up to 12 months of post-completion Optional Practical Training (OPT) following completion/graduation from their degree program. Currently, this degree program is also designated by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) as an eligible degree for the F-1 STEM OPT work authorization extension; students who secure qualifying employment may be eligible to apply for the STEM OPT extension for a cumulative total of up to 36 months of F-1 OPT work authorization.
