This course is designed as an in-depth examination of tourism in relation to culture and its impact on the identities of both hosts and guests. Some questions to be explored in this course include the role of tourism in the formation of regional, national, and transnational identities, how tourism reflects global inequities and the consequences tourism creates for local communities and everyday lives.

Ant 509 Primate Evolutionary Biology (3-4)
This course addresses the principles and specifics involved in nonhuman primate evolution. The first portion of the class investigates the relationships between ecology, sociality, and phylogeny on the one hand and the diversity of adaptations among living primates on the other. The second portion of the class will apply principles derived from the living primates to understanding the adaptations and evolutionary relationships among fossil primates, and the relationships between extinct and living species. Particular attention will be paid to major research questions relevant to significant periods in primate evolution. Prerequisite: Graduate standing in Anthropology.
Ant 510 Human Osteology (3-4)
This course is an intensive study of the anatomy of the human skeleton. This course will cover bone histology, growth and development of bones, common pathological conditions, the determination of age and sex from skeletal material, and the identification of whole and fragmented bones in archaeological and forensic contexts. This course will include a laboratory component to provide students with the opportunity to examine the material discussed in class. Prerequisite: Consent of instructor.
Ant 512 (Bio 519) Human Population Genetics (3)
In this course, students will gain an understanding of basic population genetics. We begin with some context on human evolution and migration. Then, looking mainly at human populations but also making comparisons to non-human populations, we look at the concepts of Hardy Weinberg Equilibrium (HWE) and Linkage Equilibrium (LE). Students will also learn about the tests utilized to test for HWE and LE in populations. Finally, they will also learn about the application of population genetics to the interpretation of DNA evidence in forensic science and learn how to use population databases to calculate forensic parameters such as the Random Match Probability (RMP), Likelihood Ratio (LR) and the Paternity Index (PI). Prerequisites: Genetics (Bio 212 or Bio 205 or equivalent), Ant 502 or permission of instructor.

Laboratory course in skeletal and dental identification and analysis, with emphasis on the interaction of the muscular and skeletal systems. Prerequisite: Consent of instructor.
Ant 514 Forensic Anthropology (3-4)
This course teaches the application of methods from biological anthropology and archaeology to the recovery and analysis of skeletonized human remains. The primary focus of this course is the application of these methods to investigations of unexplained deaths, including homicides, genocides, and mass disasters. Students will learn how to determine age at death, sex, ancestral affiliations, and stature from skeletal remains, and how to identify evidence of trauma and disease. Other topics include forensic botany, forensic entomology, and DNA fingerprinting. Prerequisite: Consent of instructor.
Ant 515 Nutritional Anthropology (3-4)
This course provides an introduction to the biological, ecological, and social factors influencing diet and nutrition. Basic nutritional physiology and biochemistry are presented in the first part of the course. Later topics include paleonutrition as well as nutritional issues of contemporary human population groups. The core focus is on the concept of energy balance. Time is spent in the metabolic laboratory learning how to measure metabolic energy expenditure and assess nutritional status in humans. Students participate in the collection and analysis of individual and class data on nutritional intake and energy expenditure, with an emphasis on basic techniques of data presentation, analysis, and interpretation.
Ant 516 Basic Principles and Methods of Epidemiology (3)
Introduction to epidemiology for students majoring in any aspect of public health other than epidemiology; covers the principles and methods of epidemiologic investigation including describing the patterns of illness in populations and research designs for investigating the etiology of disease. Introduces quantitative measures to determine risk, association and procedures for standardization of rates. Other topics include bias, confounding, causality, ethics, and screening.

Review and expansion of the basic concepts introduced in Epi 501 as well as introduction of more complex issues including theory of disease causation, the interrelationships of host, agent and environment, sources of epidemiology data, cohort, case control and other study designs. Ant 530 The Archaeology of Food (3)
This course explores the archaeological study of food and ancient human subsistence, diet, and foodways. Students will learn about the different approaches that archaeologists use to study ancient meals, the domestication of plants and animals, and the development of different food procuring strategies, cooking methods, food traditions, and cuisines. We discuss the social, cultural, political, economic, and ideological implications behind what we eat and how we eat it. Students will also learn about the methods used to investigate ancient foods and diets, including faunal and paleobotanical analyses, ceramic and lithic studies including chemical residue analysis and experimental studies, as well as bioarchaeological methods, such as stable isotope studies or the study of tooth wear patterns. Only one of ANT 426/530 may be taken for credit.

Ant 533 Mesoamerican Archaeology (3)
Archaeological study of the ancient peoples and cultures of Mesoamerica from the earliest inhabitants to the Spanish conquest. Coverage is chronological and evolutionary, investigating anthropological models and explanations of the rise and fall of agrarian village life, social inequality, and states and empires. Case examples of Mesoamerican civilizations reveal the comparative relevance of studying longer-term cycles of political recovery and resiliency and human-environmental relationships. Students who have received credit for Ant 433 cannot receive credit for this course.

Seminar on selected Mesoamerican writing systems. Focus varies, but Classic Mayan writing is usually emphasized. Ant 543 Archaeology of Colonial Encounters (3)
Drawing on archaeology and ethnohistory, this course focuses on new archaeological research regarding the perspectives, influences, actions, experiences, and identities of traditional peoples in cultural Contact and Colonial period circumstances marked by the arrival of outsiders. This topic ties in to the broader, enduring paradigm of historical anthropology which illuminates dynamic and multi-faceted forces of social change and the agency of local peoples in affecting change. This course is cross-cultural and interregional, covering current theoretical approaches, landmark studies, interpretations and methods from case studies. Topics include resistance, hybridity, cuisine, things, identity (and ethnogenesis), adornment, gender, diasporas, heritage, households, and approaches to collaboration in research with descendant peoples. Students who have received credit for Ant 443 cannot receive credit for this course.
Ant 547 Food, Taste, and Culture (3)
This course is an in-depth anthropological examination of food and taste from a cultural politics perspective puts what we eat and why at the center of debate and analysis. The course is based in ethnographically rich case studies that explore the cultural, economic, and social processes related to food production and consumption, as well as how taste and disgust are socially constructed. Some questions that are explored in this course include: how have anthropologists studied food and taste; what theoretical perspectives have guided anthropological research on food and taste; why are some foods elevated to be markers of ethnic or national identity; why do some foods go global; what are the processes behind food gaining World Heritage status; and how is food and the cultivation of taste linked to equity, health, and social justice? Food and taste are inter-linked and part of complex cultural processes that take on different meanings, depending on their local, regional, national, and transnational contexts. These meanings and the ways they are accepted or contested can help us better understand relations of power, social class differences, and even global inequities that food consumption and production can create in local communities and everyday lives. Only one version of ANT 447/547 may be taken for credit.
Ant 548 Environmental Archaeology (3)
Delving into the research questions, methods, and findings of current human-environmental relationships, this course introduces the battery of collaborative scientific approaches focuses on paleoenvironments, nutrition, human adaptations and impacts to the environment, and cultural change. The applications of radiocarbon (and other chronometric) dating, geomorphology, ethnobotany (seeds, charcoal, pollen, phytoliths, starch grains), zooarchaeology (animal remains), isotopic bone chemistry, and other markers will be explored. Attention will also be given to anthropogenic modifications and maintenance of landscapes, soils, forests, animal populations, and other resources, over the short and long-term. Students who receive credit for Ant 448 cannot receive credit for this course.

Ant 572 (Lcs 582) Social Movements in Latin America (3)
This class takes an anthropological perspective to discuss contemporary Latin American social movements. It considers why the intensification of social movements throughout the region may follow some traditional forms of resistance and mobilization, but also why it is a response to neoliberal globalization. These new movements seek to define a novel relation to the political realm. Unlike traditional guerrilla movements or electoral expressions of the left, they are not fundamentally organized to seize state power. Yet they have contributed to destabilizing, even, ousting governments. Social movement formation and resistance to neoliberalism are explored. Social movements, such as the indigenous mobilizations in Ecuador, mobilizations against water privatizations and gas pipeline investments in Bolivia, the Zapatista movement in Mexico, landless rural workers in Brazil, Afro-Colombians resisting investors, the urban worker strikes in Argentina, and other movements are covered. Students who have received credit for AANT/ALCS472 cannot receive credit for this course.
Ant 574 Applying Anthropology Outside the University (3)
Applied anthropology is frequently described as "anthropology put to work." It draws on anthropological concepts and methods to solve problems through building partnerships in research and problem-solving; advocating for fair and just public policy based upon sound research; examining human use and interaction with their natural and built environments; and addressing imbalances in resources, rights, and power. This course is an introduction to the history, methods and aims of applied anthropology. This class emphasizes hands-on learning: in addition to readings and discussion, students will also engage in group problem-solving and in service learning as a way of preparing them for a potential career in applied work. This is a shared-resource graduate/undergraduate course, with different requirements and expectations for each level. Students who receive credit for Ant 474 cannot receive credit for this course.

Cultural medical anthropology reveals how our ideas about and experiences of health, "dis-ease," and medicine are profoundly shaped by culture, transnational flows of people, ideas, and resources, histories of colonialism and structural inequalities, and the development of new technologies. In this course, we use cultural anthropological approaches as a lens through which to analyze the relations among: health and illness; culture and history, and: power and social and economic inequalities. Ant 607 (Wss 607) Anthropology of Gender (3)
Feminist anthropologists have long argued that gender is a key lens through which to view larger social struggles. Putting into conversation both classic and recent work by leading feminists and feminist anthropologists, this course investigates the centrality of gender and sexuality to contemporary processes around the world. Through attention to theory, ethnography and methodology, we examine the cultural production of gender and sexuality, as well as the way that ideologies and practices around gender/sexuality inform the reproduction and transformation of social hierarchies within families, communities, the nation-state, and in larger global flows. This course is cross-listed with the Department of Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. Prerequisite: Permission of instructor required.

Ant 634 Stone Tool Analysis (3)
This course introduces students to the method and theory of archaeological stone tool analysis, with an emphasis on developing baseline skills in research design, classification, analysis, and interpretation. Course content toggles between methods training, hands-on analytical practice and surveying a cross section of foundational published works and current approaches from different areas of the world. Stone tool analysis, like any other archaeological material, potentially addresses research questions of human environmental, economic, social, political organization, and religious practice. The hands-on focus of this course covers methods of typological, attribute, technological and functional classification, macroscopic use wear/breakage patterns, raw material identification (macroscopic), production (stages, scales, standardization, or the lack thereof), exchange, and ethnoarchaeology.
Ant 635 Topics in Archaeology and Ethnohistory (3-4)
Selected regional focus of this course will share the theme of the archaeology of colonial encounters. Interdisciplinary approaches using historic resources and archaeological data will be surveyed from a range of case studies. Issues highlighted in the seminar include reconstructing indigenous cultural systems prior to contact as well as cultural transformations resulting from cultural collision.

This course introduces you to analytical techniques of the study of animal bone. There is both a practical and theoretical aspect to this course. Each phase of the research process will be covered; including sampling, identifications, data processing, and analysis of publication. Issues of cultural ecology, economic organization, social interaction and ancient dietary patterns as they are determined through faunal analysis well be reviewed.

Cultural ecology, ecosystematics, environmental decision making, and environmental history are assessed as research frameworks for varying ethnographic contexts.
