How to Apply
We suggest you have all required elements for your application in place before you apply. To be eligible for graduate study, you must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university prior to starting the program.
Please read the Instructions for Application Materials below for detailed information on each required material.
Gather these general application materials:

- Your recommenders’ names and email addresses
- Any program-specific application materials listed above (such as standardized test scores, a writing samples, a portfolio, etc.)
Most tuition scholarships, assistantships and fellowships are offered and administered by academic departments. Please contact your program for information on eligibility and availability.
You will have the option to apply for an assistantship or fellowship when you fill out your admissions application using the application portal. For more information, visit our Funding Graduate Studies page.
Eligible students can also apply for a funding program that supports our diversity (such as the Graduate Opportunity Program and/or Carson Carr Graduate Diversity Fellowship) by submitting the appropriate application materials with their admissions application.
Other types of financial aid — including federal loans, work-study, state aid and other types of assistance — are also available to graduate students. We encourage our students to file the FAFSA each year, if they are eligible.

International students: If you plan to attend UAlbany on an F1 student visa, you must document your ability to meet all expenses while attending UAlbany by submitting a financial affidavit and financial documents. Please review our Information for International Applicants page for more information.
Many graduate programs require applicants to submit standardized test scores, such as the GRE or GMAT. Use the search bar above to determine if your program requires standardized test scores.
International students: If your native language is not English, you’ll have to submit English language proficiency exam scores. Please review our Information for International Applicants page for more information.
Applicants cannot submit photocopies of test results. It can take one to three weeks for official scores to be received from the testing services and processed by the University, so be sure to request your test scores well in advance of the application deadline.
Create an account within our application portal, which you will use to submit your application and application fee. Please see the "Using the Application Portal" instructions below for additional information.
Create an application account in the online application portal. You will then receive an email with a temporary PIN. Once you have entered the PIN, you will be prompted to create a password. This will allow you to return to work on your application over the course of several sessions.
Your information will be transmitted through a secure server and kept confidential until you complete and submit your application.
You must enable pop-ups in your application account to ensure it functions properly.
The non-refundable application fee is currently $75 for degree or certificate programs. The University cannot process an application until the required fee has been paid.
You can pay the application fee using a credit card (Visa, Master Card, Discover or American Express) using our application portal.
Please note that, once you pay the application fee, you cannot go back and edit your application or upload new materials. If you need to add additional materials after submission, please email [email protected] for assistance.
Application fee waivers are available for some students.

You can use the application portal to check the status of your application, including how many letters of recommendations have been received and whether you’ve been issued an admission decision.
The Graduate School cannot release application status information, including decisions, over the phone or via email.
The application portal reflects the most current information from the Graduate School.
Most graduate programs require applicants to submit a Statement of Background and Goals with their applications.
The statement is generally one to two pages discussing what you have to offer the program and what you wish to get out of the program. It should include a brief description of your field of interest, related background, desired area of study and research emphasis/career goals.
If you feel that any aspect of your past that is included in your application could be detrimental to your admission (for example, a poor undergraduate GPA), you should also discuss this problem area and how you have addressed it.
Most programs do not have formatting requirements for Statements of Background and Goals. However, some do have program-specific requirements.
Some graduate programs also request applicants to submit a supplemental questionnaire to assist faculty in assessing applicants’ qualifications.
Please save the document to your computer before you fill out the form. Once complete, save the finished document again and then upload it to the application portal.

Official transcripts from the institution where you earned your highest degree (excluding the University at Albany) will be required upon admission. To be eligible for graduate study, you must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university prior to starting the program.
If you have previously attended the University at Albany, you do not need to request a transcript from our Registrar's Office to be sent to Graduate Admissions — unless you are applying to a College of Integrated Health Sciences program through SOPHAS.
If you are applying through SOPHAS, you will need to request an official transcript be sent directly to SOPHAS.
For admitted students
If the institution's Registrar’s Office mails the transcripts directly to you, do not open envelopes containing transcripts as they will become unofficial and will not be accepted.

Most graduate degree programs require applicants to submit three Letters of Recommendation.
Recommendations can only be submitted online using our application portal.
Applicants, please log into the portal and enter the names and email addresses of the people who will be writing your Letters of Recommendation. Once your application has been saved, your recommenders will automatically receive the online recommendation form in their email inbox.
If you are applying to multiple programs, you will need to request Letters of Recommendations for each application. Letters of Recommendation cannot be shared between applications.

UAlbany students have access to various online resources for researching graduate programs, including resources for preparing to take graduate entrance exams — including the GRE, MCAT and LSAT — and licensing exams, such as NCLEX.

Application submission closes at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time on the day of the published deadline. Your application — including your fee and all required materials — must be completed by the deadline for full consideration.
If your application is late, we may still forward it to the department for review; however, we cannot guarantee that it will be reviewed or that it will not be penalized.
If you expect to submit any part of your application late, please contact the academic department. Departments are not mandated to review incomplete material, so the decision to review an incomplete application is at their discretion.
Rolling deadlines
Some programs have a rolling deadline.
It takes at least six weeks for a degree-seeking applicant to receive a decision, so programs with rolling deadlines will close application submissions when the program is filled or by the following dates:

Once your application is complete, the Graduate School forwards the materials to the academic department. Most departments start returning decisions four to six weeks after the application deadline.
While graduate programs can only admit a certain number per cycle, that number varies by department and semester. Please contact your academic department with any questions.
Once the Graduate School receives the departments’ decisions, we process the paperwork and post your decision letter to the application portal, typically within two business days.
Applying for more than one program
If you want to submit more than one application, you may create additional applications using the same application portal account.
Items must be individually uploaded into each application and each application will require payment of the application fee.
Changing or deferring your application after submission
If you have not yet received your admission decision and want to change the program or term of entry on your application, please contact the Graduate School at [email protected]. Applications can be deferred for up to one year after your original application term.

A student who is deficient in these subjects will be expected to make up the deficiencies during the first year of graduate study, in consultation with their faculty advisor(s). A lack in one or more of these courses does not automatically disqualify a student from admission. Alternative courses, research or work experience that demonstrate a strong background in math and physics can provide equivalent preparation. With the increasing demand for data analysis skills in professional positions, incoming students are expected to have basic skills in at least on computer coding language.
