Tips for Securing an Internship

Hi, I am Natasha Sharma a graduate student at UAlbany pursuing a Master of Science in Information Science (MSIS) with a concentration in Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics. I am here to share my internship experience and some tips, which helped to me secure my position as a Data Analyst Intern at IPRO.

Unexpected challenges

1. As an international student, I had to navigate the complexities of Curricular Practical Training (CPT), which further complicated the process. Many companies were unfamiliar with the requirements surrounding CPT and hesitant to hire international students due to perceived complications with work authorization. This created a barrier to finding employers who were willing to sponsor or accommodate international students like me.
2. Another challenge I faced during my internship search was navigating the Applicant Tracking System (ATS), a common tool in today's hiring processes. This system filters applications based on specific keywords and formatting, so even if you have the relevant skills, experience, and qualifications, if your resume isn’t optimized with the right keywords or follows a format that ATS can properly scan, there’s a high chance of not being selected for an interview. 

Top tips to help when searching/applying  

1. Start the Application Process Early: Timing is crucial when it comes to landing a summer internship. I learned that beginning the search well in advance can significantly improve your chances. Personally, I began applying for summer internships as early as October.
2. Optimize Your LinkedIn Profile: Having a polished and comprehensive LinkedIn profile is essential for making a strong impression in professional landscape. Ensure that your profile is fully completed, including a detailed summary, well-crafted headline, and highlighted key skills. Networking via LinkedIn is an invaluable part of securing an internship. I found that connecting with professionals in my field on LinkedIn helped me gain insights and stay updated on job opportunities. 
3. Ensure Your Resume is ATS-Friendly: In today's hiring process, many companies use Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to screen resumes. To increase your chances of making it through these systems, it’s crucial to format your resume in a way that’s ATS-compliant.

1. Job boards: - Job Boards like LinkedIn, Indeed, Glassdoor etc., are dedicated platforms where you can search for internship opportunities based on various criteria such as location, industry, and job type.
2. Google: By searching for terms like “internship” combined with your field of interest and location, you can access a wide range of listings pulled from various sources.
3. Direct Referrals: Reach out to your connections, such as professors, mentors, family, and friends, who might have knowledge of or connections to internship opportunities.

Securing an internship can be challenging, but with dedication, perseverance, and a positive attitude, you can achieve your goals. Stay consistent in your search, put in the hard work, and approach each opportunity with enthusiasm.
