What You Can Do With a PhD

Sky in the field
by Sky Hooler, UAlbany Atmospheric Science PhD Student.

What are your long-term career plans and goals?

With a PhD in Atmospheric Science, my long-term career plans are to advance my field through research in ecosystem resilience. Specifically, I aim to assess the impacts of human activities and climate change, particularly on freshwater systems, and shape environmental policies with my work. My ultimate goal is to work in a research-oriented role, either in academia or policymaking, where I can inform strategies for better management of ecosystems that are under threat.

Why did you choose a PhD? What is a PhD, and how is it different from other graduate degrees?

A PhD differs from other graduate degrees like a master's because it focuses heavily on original research, critical analysis, and the development of new theories or solutions. While a master's is often more coursework-oriented, a PhD involves large projects that culminate in a dissertation that adds to the body of new scientific knowledge. These are all reasons that I chose a PhD; it allows me to conduct independent research and contribute new knowledge to my field.

What are some career options for PhD holders? Industry? Academia? Others?

PhD holders have a wide range of career paths:

  • Academia: Becoming professors, researchers, or postdoctoral fellows at a university or college.
  • Industry: Lead or manage research and development at companies.
  • Government/Policy: Science advising, policy roles, or management in governmental agencies.
  • Nonprofits: Research, policy advising, and advocacy.
  • Science communication: Engaging the public by translating scientific findings.

What are some signs that a prospective student should pursue a PhD? How did you know it was right for you?

I knew pursuing a PhD was for me because as I went deeper into my chosen field, it felt not just like a job but something I genuinely find exciting, and I am passionate about. Some other indicators that a PhD might be the right fit:

  • Excitement for the research in a field and a desire to contribute.
  • Enjoying research and long-term projects.
  • An ability to work independently and in a team.
  • Being persistent through challenges, and resilient.
  • Curiosity and critical thinking skills to solve complex problems.

What are some cool experiences you have had while being a PhD student?

I have had many opportunities that I wouldn’t have had otherwise if I hadn’t decided to pursue a PhD. Outside of the typical academic setting, I get to work in the beautiful Adirondack Park, where I gather my samples. I've had the opportunity to collaborate with researchers in labs at other universities and see what that looks like. I have also been able to attend training courses abroad and will soon travel to Washington D.C. to gain insights into policymaking.
