UAlbany Students Celebrate Saudi Arabia National Day

Dozens of international flags are lined up before an outdoor event on UAlbany's Uptown Campus.

The recently formed Saudi Student Organization at UAlbany celebrated Saudi National Day under their green flag on September 23, 2024.

Campus Center West was the ideal venue for celebrating history and culture, since many UAlbany community members stopped to learn and interact with about 20 traditionally-dressed Saudi students waiving miniature national flags.

PhD student Fatimah Rageh, who is the club's vice president, organized an afternoon of activities including demonstrations and educational materials to commemorate the founding and unification of the Kingdom in 1351 AH/1932 AD.

Rageh is from the southwest region of Saudi Arabia and is studying physics at UAlbany, with a focus on researching quantum field theory, entropic dynamics, classical limit and information physics.

Rageh also visited the First Year Experience (FYE) course, "Seeing through Other Eyes: Building Intercultural Understanding," on October 22, 2024, to present about her country and culture to curious, internationally-minded students.

She talked about the progress of girls and women in society back home, particularly in relation to the class's assignment to watch the 2012 movie Wadjda about a Saudi girl's coming of age.

The Center for International Education and Global Strategy (CIEGS) congratulates Rageh and her peers for forming the Saudi Student Association and thanks them for sharing their heritage and culture with UAlbany.
