Mother Language Day
In 1952 Bangladeshi students protested language suppression, leading to UNESCO adopting Mother Language Day (MLD) in 1999. Today MLD emphasizes preserving languages, recognizing linguistic heritage, and celebrating cultural diversity globally. UAlbany's LLC Department supports multilingualism and diversity, celebrating the linguistic and cultural heritages of the 8 languages we speak, teach, and live.
In honor of Mother Language Day 2/22/24, all students are invited to enjoy the afternoon-evening in Humanities 354, filled with fun, learning, contests, and prizes (flier):

French, Italian, Russian, & Spanish - Language Quest: Talk Edition - 1:30 to 2 p.m.
Quick Q&As with language students - Faculty Fireside Chat - 2 to 3 p.m.
Get to know your profs, their language passion & research - Galettes des Rios & Crêpes - 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.
French King Cake & Chandeleur traditions (in HU290) - Desserts Around the World - 4:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Broaden your culinary horizons - Student Essay/Poetry Contest - 5 to 5:30 p.m.
600 words max on "Why Language Matters to Me," submit at [email protected] by 2/14/24 with subject line MLD essay/poetry contest (by submitting, entrants give LLC the rights to use submitted content) - Stump the Professor Content - 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.
Try to bring slang the professors don't know (English and other languages) - All the Facts - 6:40 to 7:30 p.m.
