What is problem-based learning?
Problem-based learning is a well-established instructional and curricular approach in which the instructor facilitates learning, while students self-direct and self-regulate their learning. It can be used in any academic discipline, with any type of course or student.
Problem-based learning empowers students to:
-
Conduct research, integrate theory and practice, and apply knowledge and skills to develop a viable solution to a defined problem
-
Identify and incorporate the insights of other disciplines to construct meaningful solutions to problems, as well as evaluate and adjust the process of problem solving
-
Develop strong communication and listening skills in a team setting that will encourage civic-minded behavior and cooperative learning
