Writing Protest Now, 2023
Cardboard, tissue paper, pen, glue, pipe cleaners
12 x 6 3/8 x 3/4
In these hands-on workshops led by NYPL librarian Paloma Celis Carbajal, participants made their own cartonera books—books with handmade covers constructed with recycled cardboard and other unexpected materials—while learning about the impact and cultural history of this book-making practice in Latin American and the Caribbean.
The contents of the book included six texts—essays and poems—on protest by graduate students in the Department of Latin American, Caribbean, and U.S. Latino Studies who read their work aloud during the session. The volume was edited by faculty from the University Libraries; the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures; and Department of Latin American, Caribbean, and U.S. Latino Studies.
Paloma Celis Carbajal serves as the Curator for Latin American, Iberian and Latino Studies Collections at the New York Public Library. Previously, at the University of Wisconsin-Madison she founded and developed the most comprehensive cartonera book collection in the world and created the Cartonera Publishers Database.
The workshop was presented in conjunction with our exhibition Libros/Arte: Handmade Books from Latin America & the Caribbean which was on view August 7 – December 4, 2023.
