Expertise

Miguel Rodriguez's expertise covers all aspects of electron and ion microscopy, including installation, repair, maintenance and usage of these advanced characterization instruments. This requires a thorough mastery of various component subsystems including vacuum technology, electron and ion sources from 500V to 400kV, electromagnetic lenses, hydraulics, pneumatics and water chillers. In addition, many of the instruments at CNSE are fitted with specialty spectrometers for chemical analysis by detecting electron energy loss or X-ray emission for which he is also responsible.

Rodriguez brings his 24 years of electronics repair & troubleshooting experience (15+ specifically working with electron optics) to the support of many, if not all, of the ongoing research projects at the CNSE. In addition, he is an instructor in both formal electron microscopy courses (CNSE 670 Transmission Electron Microscopy) and informal settings to train students and staff in the use of TEMs, SEMs and FIBs. Finally, he is involved in the design and implementation of novel instrumentation to advance the current state-of-the-art in charged particle microscopy as a member of the metrology team.
