Events Honoring Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month

ALBANY, N.Y. (April 12, 2021) – April is Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month and the Advocacy Center for Sexual Violence has full calendar of virtual events planned to advocate for and educate the campus community.

The Advocacy Center provides a safe and welcoming environment for students to receive support in the aftermath of violence. The center also leads SVPA, a student peer education group with 21 trained students assisting in the delivery of programs across campus. Together, SVPA and the Advocacy Center invite you to join the following events:

  • Through May 3, Yards for Yeardley campaign. UAlbany is joining other SUNY institutions in this national effort to track yards in memory of Yeardley Love, a college student in Virginia whose life was tragically taken by an ex-boyfriend. Participate by walking or running in Love’s memory and logging your miles daily.
  • Wednesday, 7 p.m. Myths & Facts of Law & Order SVU. New York State Police Senior Investigator Mike Castle will join a moderated program about the criminal investigation process.
  • Thursday, 7 p.m. Persons with Disabilities, Intimate Partner Violence & Domestic Violence. Those with disabilities experience alarmingly high rates of intimate partner violence & domestic violence. Join an important conversation about how you can support a friend going through this situation, how to be an ally to those with disabilities & learn what options you have for support.  
  • Monday, April 19, 7 p.m. Stealthing, Secret Snapchats & More. New York State Police Senior Investigator Mike Castle and the SVPAs will talk about stealthing, sharing nudes, secret snaps and more.
  • Tuesday, April 20, 7:30 p.m. No Does Not Mean Convince Me. As part of a campaign to address consent and coercion on college campuses, the SVPAs will lead this program about affirmative consent, coercion & the impact of TV, social media and rape culture.
  • Wednesday, April 21, 7 p.m. Atlanta Murders: Anti-Asian Violence or Sexual Violence? BOTH! This program will discuss the issue of whether society has become so anesthetized to sexual violence because it is commonplace.
  • Monday, April 26, 7 p.m. Sexual Violence in the Asian American Community. This program will discuss how the fetishization and the emasculation of Asian people has influenced the sexual violence prevention movement. By countering rape culture & speaking out to support survivors, you can be an ally to support survivors and stop sexual violence.
  • Tuesday, April 27, 7:30 p.m. Don't Assume Yes by the Way that I Dress. As part of their campaign to address consent and coercion on college campuses, the SVPAs will lead this program to raise awareness about affirmative consent based on the way a person dresses.
  • Wednesday, April 28, all day. Denim Day. Wear jeans to raise awareness of rape and sexual assault.
