UAlbany Atmospheric Scientist Named Among World’s Most Influential Researchers
By Mike Nolan
ALBANY, N.Y. (Dec. 12, 2024) — Atmospheric scientist Aiguo Dai has once again been named among the world’s most-cited researchers.
Clarivate, a leading provider of data and analytics for the scientific research community, has released its 2024 list of “Highly Cited Researchers.” The annual report features researchers who have demonstrated considerable influence in their field through publication of academic papers cited by a significant number of peers.
To receive inclusion in Clarivate’s list, a researcher must author multiple papers that rank in the top 1% by citations in their field over the past decade. Few of the world’s scientists and social scientists make the cut — those on the list account for one in 1,000 of the world’s researchers.
Dai, who has regularly been on the list, was included again in the geosciences category. He’s among 6,886 researchers from 59 countries and regions who were recognized this year.
“This selection is a testament to the high-impact scientific research that is being carried out by Professor Dai,” said Department of Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences Chair and Professor Ryan Torn. "I congratulate him on continuing to be one of the most influential scientists in his field. We are fortunate to have him as a colleague and research mentor.”
"The Highly Cited Researchers list is among the metrics widely used for current scientific impacts by individual scientists. I'm happy to see my name and UAlbany continue to be listed together with many other leading scientists from top research universities,” added Dai.
Dai, a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences at the College of Arts and Sciences, is an internationally renowned climate scientist with a focus on Arctic climate change, natural climate variability, future climate change, the global water cycle, hydroclimate, drought, Asian monsoons and climate data analysis.
He has published more than 200 peer-reviewed articles in numerous journals related to climate science and is the most cited scholar at UAlbany, according to Google Scholar, with a total of more than 66,577 citations, including 33,432 in the last five years.
Along with the Clarivate report, Dai was also recently identified as UAlbany’s most influential researcher through a study published by Stanford University. The annual study highlights top researchers, creating a public database of the top 100,000 scientists. More than 40 faculty members at UAlbany across two dozen disciplines were ranked this year.
