York State Writers Institute Celebrates 20 Years as
a Literary Powerhouse with the �Writing Semester� at
UAlbany

The University at Albany will celebrate Spring 2004
with the Writing Semester, dedicated to the observance
of the 20th anniversary of the New York State Writers
Institute and co-sponsored by the Institute and the
College of Arts and Sciences. Highlights of the semester
include visits by humorist Dave Barry, columnist Ellen
Goodman, a dramatic adaptation of Richard Russo�s novel
Mohawk, and the designation of the State Author and

Grant Brings Lubensky�s Total Awards to $1 Million-plus

Sophia Lubensky, professor of Russian in the Department
of Languages, Literatures and Cultures, has received
a two-year, $274,448 grant from the U.S. Department
of Education. The award brings the total of Lubensky�s
grants since 1981 to more than $1 million. More

Creating
a Genre with �The Technology Plays�

The production team for William Kennedy�s short play,
�In the System,� had worked through the night. They
were running on adrenaline, having gone without sleep
for about 30 hours. At 3:30 a.m. the night before �The
Technology Plays� were to debut at the University at
Albany�s New Library, the final cut of the film was
loaded onto the computer in one of six small booths
set up for this purpose. The Pulitzer Prize-winning
author and founder of the New York State Writers Institute
walked into the booth and viewed the final product.
The production team waited outside. Finally, Kennedy
opened the door, walked out, and smiled. He said, �It�s
