How Students Spent Their UAlbany Summer 2024

ALBANY, N.Y. (Aug. 27, 2024) – Even when classes are not in session, University at Albany students find ways to gain valuable experience through a variety of summer internships, research, volunteer, and other applied learning opportunities.

A few months ago, we asked our students to share how they are spending their UAlbany Summer 2024.

Here’s a small sample of the experiences shared with us:

Cameron Felix, a junior informatics major at the College of Emergency Preparedness, Homeland Security and Cybersecurity, was selected for a paid Major League Baseball internship with its Information Security Team, which focuses on safeguarding the league’s critical digital assets.

Eight students participating in UAlbany’s longstanding paid Summer Research Program met with SUNY Chancellor John B. King Jr. at the ETEC research and development complex to share their research projects focused on artificial intelligence topics.
Abby Greco, a junior physics major at the College of Arts and Sciences, worked as a counselor at Space Camp, where she taught children about the history of the U.S. space program, including the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo missions, as well as the space shuttle program, Artemis and commercial space flight missions.
Alma Kolakji, a junior chemistry major at the College of Arts and Sciences, was on campus supporting research to make rocket fuel more environmentally friendly through the College of Nanotechnology, Science, and Engineering’s Summer Undergraduate Research Program.
Seventeen UAlbany students were among the inaugural class of the SUNY Climate Corps Internship Program, which offered work experience in research and policy at state agencies with environmental and sustainability missions.
Evan Walters, a GIS master’s student in the Department of Geography and Planning, started a research project with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to better track the distribution and stocking of grass carp, a species of large herbivorous freshwater fish.
