Commuter Corner

Trying to navigate being a commuter student? Here are some tips and tricks to help you stay connected with the campus while you are here or away:

  • Building a connection to campus can be hard for a commuter. Try joining clubs on campus. You can find these opportunities on the myInvolvement webpage.
  • Gaps between classes can be a blessing in disguise. Use that time to get homework done rather than going home and driving back later.
  • Be mindful of stacking classes. Five classes back-to-back on a single day may work for some, but it may prove to be exhausting.
  • Form study groups with other students. It is not only a great way to succeed academically, but also expand your social circle.
  • Need a place to relax and chill during your free time on campus? Check out the Transfer and Commuter Lounge in Campus Center 109.
  • Cooking meals at home can be a great way to save money. Eating lunch every day on campus can be expensive. You will find two microwaves in the Campus Center food court and two in the Transfer/Commuter lounge to heat your food in. Alternatively, you can look into getting a commuter meal plan to use at the dining halls.
  • Do you want a place to keep your stuff on campus? Rent a locker. They are in the transfer/commuter lounge and on the third floor of the Campus Center. Fill out a rental form on the Campus Center Connections webpage.
  • Try to leave your home early on exam days. Rhere may be roadblocks or other issues that prevent you from getting to class. You can stay up to date with unexpected and scheduled road closures by signing up for the City of Albany’s text notification service Nixle. You can sign up on the Albany Police Department’s website.
  • Want to skip the line for food options in the Campus Center? Download the Mobile ID app to order from locations in the Campus Center (make sure to add funds to Munch Money). The app does not charge sales taxes on orders.

Finding Your Work/School Balance

Want to gain work experience while in school? Here are some ways you can find part-time work and internships as well as balance work with school:

  • Job board websites frequently do not have the most up-to-date information. Use the company website and apply directly there.
  • Restaurant and retail work typically offers flexible hours.
  • Consider looking for an internship. Many government internships are available in many different fields.
  • If looking for internships or part-time jobs, take advantage of Handshake.
  • Do not give away time you do not have. Stay on top of your schoolwork. Remember you are a student first.
  • Create to-do lists to stay organized. Outlook has this feature along with a calendar feature.
  • Make sure that your employer knows that your schedule may change semester to semester.
  • Career Services, here on the Uptown Campus in the Science Library, is a fantastic resource for all students, first year to senior year. They can help you prepare your application materials, practice for your interview, identify jobs you may be interested in and more. Stop by no matter what class year you are.
