In honor of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, volunteers from UAlbany, Albany Med and the greater community packed and delivered 700 “comfort bags” to support victims who undergo forensic testing and treatment at Albany Med.
Now in its fifth year, We Care is a joint-initiative of Albany Med and UAlbany. At the event on Thursday at the SEFCU Arena, attendees formed an assembly line to pack the bags with items such as clothing, toiletries, gift cards, a teddy bear and an encouraging note from a member of the community. They then packed the bags into waiting ambulances to transport them to Albany Med with support by UAlbany's Five Quad ambulance service, Albany County EMS and the Office of the Sheriff. Every victim who presents at Albany Med will be given a bag.
The We Care project is sponsored by Albany Med and the University at Albany with support from community partners including the Seymour Fox Memorial Foundation, SUNY’s Got Your Back, Albany County District Attorney’s Office, Albany County Safe Harbour Program, CVS Health, Albany County Sheriff’s Office, UAlbany Auxiliary Services, Toyota of Clifton Park, Dunkin’ and Walmart.
