We offer degrees at the bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral levels as well as graduate certificates in a wide range of education and mental health fields.

 

Undergraduate Programs
 

The School of Education offers four undergraduate majors and multiple minors. Each of these academic pathways offers you the ability to explore your interests within the field of education and gain real-life experience. Through the Great Dane Teacher Pathway, you can pursue an accelerated pathway to a master's degree in education and New York State teacher certification.

Graduate Programs
 

A variety of master’s, doctoral, and certificate programs allow you to advance your education and career goals. Our programs range from mental health counseling and educational and school psychology, to global education, educational policy, and instructional design – and many more! We also offer several teacher and school leadership preparation programs. Our large offering of nationally-ranked online programs allows for flexibility and an individualized learning experience.

Continuing Education
 

The School of Education offers several options for those seeking to advance their careers through professional development and continuing education in such fields as teaching, school leadership, higher education, international education, and mental health. In some cases, students can earn micro-credentials, badges, and Continuing Teacher and Leader Education (CTLE) hours.

Department of Educational Policy & Leadership

The Department of Educational Policy & Leadership is dedicated to enhancing the understanding and practice of educational leadership and policy at all levels of the education system, cradle-to-career. We advance this mission through our programs of teaching, research, and engagement with practitioners and scholars in the field. We offer doctoral, master’s and advanced graduate certificates in higher education leadership, educational policy and school leadership. All programs adopt a global perspective, focusing on how international systems and policies support academic excellence.

Department of Educational & Counseling Psychology

The Department of Educational & Counseling Psychology is multidisciplinary and devoted to research, teaching, and service in the use of psychological principles to promote lifelong growth, learning, and development in multiple life roles and contexts.

Department of Educational Theory & Practice

The Department of Educational Theory and Practice (ETAP) is a vibrant and inclusive community of students and faculty. In this community, students and faculty dream and challenge, create and examine, test and implement the best of what education can be to meet the contemporary learning needs of society wherever those arise.

ETAP faculty have built working relationships with schools, universities, businesses, corporations, and government agencies locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally.

The Department offers programs for advanced study and research in Language and Literacy, Instructional Design and Technology, Mathematics and Science education, Teaching and Learning, and Curriculum and Instruction.

Department of Literacy Teaching & Learning

The School of Education at the University at Albany is the #4 provider of online graduate education in the nation, according to U.S News & World Report's rankings, and has remained in the top 10 for eight straight years. The Department of Literacy Teaching & Learning offers six fully online programs, including an online PhD in Literacy.

Research

Our faculty and students conduct leading-edge research on how people learn and how to teach in the 21st-century contexts in order to improve and transform educational practices. Our current research focuses on four cross-cutting themes: Innovations in learning with technology; STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) learning and teaching; Language, literacies, and TESOL; and Teacher learning and school improvement.
