Mary Ellen Stitt

Mary Ellen Stitt is an Assistant Professor in the School of Criminal Justice and a Faculty Affiliate in the Department of Sociology. She studies the state’s governance of substance use and mental illness. One current project examines treatment-based alternatives in the criminal courts, with a focus on pretrial diversion. Another analyzes the policing of underground drug markets and its impacts.
Mary Ellen holds a PhD in Sociology from the University of Texas at Austin and is a former American Bar Foundation / National Science Foundation Doctoral Fellow in Law & Inequality and Fulbright Scholar. Her research has been funded by the Harrington Graduate Fellows Program, the Horowitz Foundation for Social Policy, P.E.O. International, and the National Science Foundation.
