Hindelang Center to Host 21st Annual Lecture

ALBANY, N.Y. — The University at Albany’s Michael J. Hindelang Criminal Justice Research Center will host its 21st Annual Lecture on Thursday, May 4th, 2023, at 4pm in the Standish Room, located on the third floor of the Science Library. The lecture will feature Dr. Khalil Gibran Muhammad of Harvard University.

Dr. Khalil Gibran Muhammad is the Ford Foundation Professor of History, Race and Public Policy at the Harvard Kennedy School where he directs the Institutional Antiracism and Accountability Project. He co-hosts the Pushkin Industries podcast “Some of My Best Friends Are...” and is the former Director of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture — a division of the New York Public Library and the world's leading library and archive of global Black history.

Khalil recently co-chaired a National Academies of Science consensus study, "Reducing Racial Inequality in Crime and Justice," and is the award-winning author of “The Condemnation of Blackness: Race, Crime and the Making of Modern Urban America.” He is a frequent contributor to documentary films, such as the Oscar nominated “13th” and an occasional writer for the New York Times, including “The 1619 Project,” among other media outlets. He serves on numerous boards, including the Vera Institute of Justice, The Museum of Modern Art, and the New York Historical Society.

The School of Criminal Justice administers externally funded research through the renowned Hindelang Criminal Justice Research Center. Faculty, research staff, and students work on research projects, develop policy recommendations in the field of criminal justice, disseminate research results through publications in leading scholarly journals, sponsor lectures and other colloquia, and provide opportunities for graduate students to learn research skills and develop dissertation topics.
