New Faculty Orientation

The Provost’s Office hosts New Faculty Orientation each August to introduce new faculty to UAlbany's leadership structure, campus research and teaching resources, state employment benefits, and more.

The orientation is organized in partnership with various partners across campus. New faculty members receive a detailed invitation via email.

New Faculty Academy

The New Faculty Academy (NFA) is a one-year program offered to new junior faculty, focused on helping them develop and advance as both teachers and researchers.

Academy participants attend monthly events on tenure and promotion, teaching, and research, which are held throughout the year.

Faculty members must register to participate in NFA, and those who register are expected to attend all events.

Detailed information is provided during the New Faculty Orientation.

Provost's Leadership Academy

The Provost’s Leadership Academy facilitates the success of UAlbany’s emerging leaders by providing training and mentorship to the University's associate professors and early-career full professors.

The academy — established in 2022 by Provost Carol Kim — offers leadership training, sessions on the University’s academics, governance and administrative functions, and an introduction to UAlbany’s key leaders.

Each year, about 10 faculty members are selected as Leadership Academic Fellows through a competitive application process.

A call for applications is usually issued in the summer, with selected faculty participating in the academy during the following academic year.

The year-long academy includes an orientation in August, monthly events during the academic year, and a capstone project that involves interviewing a University leader (such as the president, provost, deans or vice presidents).

Fellows who successfully complete the academy receive a certificate from the provost and are encouraged to grow their leadership skills through peer mentoring.

Provost Fellow Program

The Provost Fellow Program offers associate and full professors interested in administration the chance to work on an important administrative project.

Fellows collaborate with the Provost’s Office and other stakeholders, develop policies and procedures, and identify solutions to a particular challenge.

Exact responsibilities vary depending on the program’s priority for the year, with the annual call for applications outlining the upcoming year’s focus.

Fellows usually receive one course release and a stipend to work part-time for one academic year.

Previous fellows and their projects include:

  • Chris Wagner (faculty development)
  • Glyne Griffith (faculty development)
  • Janine Jurkowski (public engagement)
  • Michelle Harris (faculty diversity)
Department Chair Conversation Series

The Department Chair Conversation Series provides department chairs with best practices for effectively leading and responding to challenges at the department level.

Department chairs are invited to attend a series of monthly events, including formal presentations and informal discussions, during the academic year.

The series covers topics such as budgets and resources, mentoring, faculty and student diversity, recruitment and hiring, tenure and promotion, and more.

Event details are emailed directly to department chairs.
