Discovery and Learning for the Betterment of All

At the University at Albany, public engagement has been at the center of our research and teaching since the founding of our institution 180 years ago.

Today, UAlbany's engaged scholars, students, staff and alumni work side-by-side with partners from the public and private sectors to find approaches and solutions to our most pressing challenges and to improve the well-being and resilience of communities, at home and all around the world.

Community Engagement Classification

The Carnegie Foundation seal for its Elective Community Engagement Classification

The University at Albany is proud to be among a select group of universities and colleges to be designated by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching as a community engaged institution.

This classification reaffirms the University’s institutional commitment to deepen the practice of service and to further strengthen bonds between campus and community.

Community engagement describes collaboration between institutions of higher education and their larger communities (local, regional/state, national, global) for the mutually beneficial exchange of knowledge and resources in a context of partnership and reciprocity.

The purpose of community engagement is the partnership of college and university knowledge and resources with those of the public and private sectors to:

  • Enrich scholarship, research, and creative activity
  • Enhance curriculum, teaching, and learning
  • Prepare educated, engaged citizens
  • Strengthen democratic values and civic responsibility
  • Address critical societal issues
  • Contribute to the public good
