About

Dr. Howley is a perinatal epidemiologist with a focus on birth defect and stillbirth research and surveillance. Howley is particularly interested in exploring drug safety during pregnancy and understanding how maternal disease and medication use during pregnancy impact the risk of birth defects. Her recent work has also focused on epidemiologic methods to reduce bias in studies of exposures during pregnancy. She is part of an interdisciplinary team of scientists that conduct multi-site case-control studies funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. These studies, including the Birth Defect Study To Evaluate Pregnancy exposureS (BD-STEPS), seek to understand the causes of birth defects and stillbirth. Howley is currently the principal investigator of the New York Center for Birth Defects Research and Prevention.
