S. M. Ashiqul Islam, PhD, is an assistant professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the College of Integrated Health Sciences, University at Albany, SUNY, and a faculty member of the AI Plus Institute. Before joining UAlbany, Dr. Islam held a position as a Staff Scientist at Thermo Fisher Scientific, leading bioinformatics research and development efforts, and completed his postdoctoral training at the Department of Bioengineering, UC San Diego. He received his PhD in Biomedical Studies with a focus on bioinformatics from Baylor University.
Dr. Islam’s research focuses on leveraging AI and machine learning to address key health challenges, particularly in cancer genomics. His work involves developing advanced computational tools to analyze mutational and methylation signatures, aiming to enhance early detection of cancer and personalize treatment strategies. He specializes in integrating multi-omics data—genomic, transcriptomic, and epigenomic—to gain comprehensive insights into disease mechanisms and improve public health outcomes.
In addition to his research, Dr. Islam is committed to fostering interdisciplinary collaboration. He actively works with experts in biostatistics, biology, and data science to drive innovations in computational biology and personalized medicine. His academic and industry experience equips him with a unique perspective on translating research into real-world healthcare applications.
