Lloyd R. Wilson

Dr. Wilson is an associate research professor in the Department of Environmental Health Sciences. He has been affiliated with the school since he entered it as a PhD student in the early 1990s. He has taught several classes and mentored many students while his primary responsibilities were with the New York State Department of Health Center for Environmental Health (CEH). Overall, his CEH work was to understand and mitigate exposure to toxic agents, and then to mitigate them to protect public health. Potential sources of toxic agents that were studied included hazardous and solid waste sites, industry, home environment, and the work environment.

Besides his regulatory responsibilities, Dr. Wilson participated in and or led research sponsored by the Department or by outside funding sources such as CDC, EPA, ATSDR and NYSERDA. Studies that resulted in presentations at national conferences included an ambient air study in New York City that evaluated pollutant concentrations and the association with asthma hospitalizations, pharmaceuticals in wastewater treatment plant effluent and drinking water sources, and health outcomes associated with harmful algal blooms.

In 2004, he took a position in the Bureau of Water Supply Protection, and he retired from it as the Director in 2019. While working in the Bureau he was responsible for emerging drinking water issues (issues outside established regulatory programs) resulting in him serving on three expert panels EPA held on hydrofracking, working on several subcommittees of the Association of State Drinking Water Administrators (ASDWA), and serving on EPA’s Science Advisory Board Drinking Water Subcommittee.
