Dr. Jack A. DeHovitz is a Distinguished Service Professor of Medicine at the State University of New York (SUNY) Downstate Health Sciences University (DHSU) and Adjunct Professor of Epidemiology and Biostatistics. His research has focused on studies examining the associated risk and natural history of HIV and epidemiology as well as the prevention of HIV. Dr. DeHovitz directs the Special Treatment and Research (STAR) Program at DHSU, a multidisciplinary unit that links population-based research, community outreach and clinical care, employing nearly 100 researchers and support staff.
DeHovitz serves or has served as co-investigator or principal investigator of research grants from NIAID, NIDA and CDC. Dr. DeHovitz has has been extensively involved in global health and leads a joint University at Albany NIH/Fogarty- funded research and training program focusing on infectious disease control in Eastern Europe and Central Asia. This program, which began in 1993, has worked in 11 countries in the region. Through this program he has provided long term training to over 100 health care researchers from the region and co-authored a number of key publications highlighting the burden of HIV in the region. He serves on the steering committee of the UAlbany Center for Collaborative Research in Practice and Policy (CCHRPP).
