Program

Presented in partnership with The Egg as part of the Dance in Albany series (see info on left) and as a collaboration between each venue's resident company. The performance is part of a series spotlighting local artists. Funding support provided by the University at Albany Foundation and University Auxiliary Services.

As both a collaborative artist and venue venture, this performance is a unique one.

For over 30 years, the ESDC has been the resident company of The Egg.  In 2008, the Capital Trio (pianist Duncan Cumming, violinist Hilary Cumming and cellist Şölen Dikener) was named ensemble-in-residence at the UAlbany Performing Arts Center.  For the first time ever, the two groups of artists will collaborate on an evening length program of live music and dance.

“For many years, our two venues have been very fortunate to have artists that we fondly call our own,” say Egg Executive Director Diane Eber and UAlbany Performing Arts Center Associate Director Kim Engel.  “As presenters of the Dance in Albany series since 2015, the timing seemed right to bring together our resident ensembles for an engagement as part of the series to celebrate the incredible talent right in our very own buildings.”

The program will feature all live music and will include two dance works as well as a music interlude.

Back in 2018, the two ensembles made their first foray into collaboration when the UAlbany Performing Arts Center commissioned them to created As Seen from Above to music selections from William Matthews’ “A Book of Hours” in honor of the 25th anniversary of UAlbany’s College of Arts and Sciences. For this performance, that work will be expanded to include more selections of Matthews’ work.

Premiering on the program will be Boundary Behavior to David Walther's "Eighth Duo" for violin and piano performed by Duncan and Hilary Cumming. The choreography explores how boundaries control and curtail movement and yet enable it when they segment, shatter, reshape and become living malleable entities.

The Capital Trio will also offer Beethoven’s Piano Trio in G major, Op. 1 No. 2 as an interlude between the two choreographed works on the program.
