Move into a fully furnished, clean apartment without a credit check or a co-signer. There also are no hidden fees: laundry, internet, fitness facilities, utilities and garbage removal are all included.
You’ll have 24/7 access to Residential Life staff, as well as a full-time maintenance team, who manage the University Apartments with transparent policies. Our campus is well maintained and up to code.
Rising upperclassmen, students who are at least 21 years old and/or graduate students can select housing in Freedom Apartments, Liberty Terrace or Empire Commons.
Note: A rising upperclassmen is defined as any continuing student who has earned at least 56 credits. To check your earned credits, request a degree audit.
Apply for Academic Year Housing
To ensure a seamless experience when selecting your housing option, please make sure you have completed all immunization and health requirements.
Continuing students are required to pay a housing deposit, which will be credited toward housing charges.
The $125 deposit can be paid on E-Pay. After you log in, select “Deposits,” choose the upcoming semester and click “Housing Deposits.”
The deposit will be credited toward your housing charges.
If you want to cancel your housing after selecting housing, submit a Housing Cancellation Form. Your 2024-2025 housing deposit is only refundable if you cancel your housing by Friday, April 5, 2024.
The 2024-2025 Housing Application for continuing students opens February 1, 2024. You can access the housing application via the Housing Portal.
If you are currently enrolled at UAlbany but are studying abroad or living off campus, you can return to on-campus housing. Please contact [email protected] to request your housing application be activated before housing selection begins.
Students who received a housing award as part of their financial aid package will not have access to the Empire Commons housing application. Students with housing awards can email [email protected] requesting access to the Empire Commons housing application and acknowledging they understand the housing award does not apply to Empire Commons.
If you know who you want to live with, be sure to list your roommates/apartment-mates’ NetIDs and last names on your housing application. Have them list your NetID and last name on their application(s).
If you are looking for roommates or apartment-mates, use the free matching tool Roomsurf. UAlbany’s code is UA1844. We also suggest students join their class year’s official Facebook group.
Note: All requested roommates, suite-mates or apartment-mates must be eligible to live in the space they want to select at the time of selection. For example, a rising upperclassman cannot select an apartment with a rising sophomore during the rising upperclassmen housing selection periods.
Housing selection dates and times will be available on the Housing Portal’s “My Home” page once you’ve completed your housing application.
Your housing selection date and time is when you’ll return to the Housing Portal to select your room. That date and time are determined first by your credits and then by your grade point average (GPA).
If you believe your assigned date and time is incorrect, please contact [email protected].
If your assigned date and time have passed, you must select housing any time until your housing selection period ends.
However, since housing is available on a first come, first served basis, we recommend making your housing selection during your assigned date and time or soon thereafter.
If two or more students want to live together, the student with the earliest housing selection date and time should select housing for the group.
Note: All requested roommates, suite-mates or apartment-mates must be eligible to live in the space they want to select at the time of selection. For example, a rising upperclassman cannot select an apartment with a rising sophomore during the rising upperclassmen housing selection periods.
At your assigned date and time, log into the Housing Portal to select your housing.

If your apartment-mates are assigned to the wrong bedrooms, each student who wants to switch must send an email to [email protected].
If you cannot find a room or apartment with enough vacancies to accommodate your group, you must select housing separately during your individual selection dates and times.
If you cannot select a room or apartment, but it is listed as vacant, then that space is unavailable. It is only available to students of another gender, students who need an accessible apartment or Residential Life staff. Please select an available room, suite or apartment.
The Special Interest Housing Selection period is February 20, 2024. Please see below for detailed information about Special Interest Housing.
The General Housing Selection Period is February 21 to 23, 2024.
The Dutch Quad and Colonial Quad Application and Selection Period for rising juniors and seniors is March 8, 2024.
Notes:
-
Juniors and seniors may select housing in Dutch and Colonial Quads only if space is available on March 8. However, since these housing locations typically fill with rising sophomores, Residential Life encourages rising upperclassmen to select housing in the University Apartments during the rising upperclassmen housing selection period.
-
Ten Eyck Hall on Dutch Quad will be closed for renovations starting Fall 2024.
Students who selected an Empire Commons apartment are required to submit their License Understanding Form by March 8, 2024.
Students who selected a room in any other housing location should skip this step.
After you complete these steps, your housing assignment will be listed on the Housing Portal’s “My Home” page. If your housing assignment is not listed, you will need to try again.
If you’re not satisfied with your housing assignment, contact [email protected].
Special Interest Housing Information
All Honors College students have the option of living in honors housing each year they attend UAlbany.
Honors College juniors and seniors can select housing in the G1 and G2 buildings in Empire Commons during the Special Interest Housing Selection period.
Note: Your apartment-mate(s) must also be Honors College students if you choose to live in honors housing. However, vacancies in your apartment may be assigned to students who are not members of the Honors College.
Since single-gender housing may not be appropriate or comfortable for all students, a limited number of gender-inclusive rooms are available in our residence halls and apartments.
Students who select Gender-Inclusive Housing can select roommates and apartment-mates from across the gender spectrum.
You must request to live in Gender-Inclusive Housing on the Comment page of the Housing Application.
You'll receive an email when the required Gender-Inclusive Housing Application is available for you to complete in the Housing Portal.
Then, you’ll select your room and roommates/suitemates during the General Housing Selection period. (If you don’t select an apartment-mate, other students who also applied for Gender-Inclusive Housing will be assigned to your space.)
Please contact Assistant Director for Community Development Jameelee Ford at [email protected] with any questions regarding Gender-Inclusive Housing.
Students who require housing accommodations must have their medical need(s) documented by Disability Access and Inclusion Student Services. Documentation must be renewed each year before the Special Interest Housing Selection period.
Students with housing accommodations can live with any roommate(s) and/or apartment-mate(s).
Recess Housing
Empire Commons, Liberty Terrace and Freedom Apartments do not close during University recesses (Thanksgiving Break, Intersession and Spring Break), so residents automatically have access to their apartments during the breaks and do not need to apply for recess housing.
