One Heck of a Rollercoaster Ride: Stories from the Student Emergency Fund
To help students stay on track through graduation despite unexpected financial emergencies, the Student Emergency Fund was established in 2018. Due to COVID-19 related issues, there is a significant increase in requests to the fund. Since the start of the pandemic, the Student Emergency Fund has awarded 294 grants to students in need, for a total of more than $174,000. There are 112 applications under review.
“Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, our students, like the rest of the world, have been under incredible stress," said Assistant Dean of Students and Emergency Fund Director Sally D'Alessandro, LMSW. "The Student Emergency Fund is a much-needed oasis for these students. It has allowed them to alleviate pressing financial concerns and focus on a strong finish to their academic year. We are so thankful that our donors, including many alumni, have stepped up to ensure student success."
One student said, “It’s been one heck of a rollercoaster ride, but it’s people like you that are helping people like me to see this crisis through. I am so grateful for your help and your time with me. You are helping me to genuinely live longer physically and mentally! Ever since this COVID-19 crisis has broken, I have been distraught because of my health issues. I cannot go home into the city because of the highest volume of cases and so here is the only place I can safely be.”
Some students have seen their work hours reduced or lost jobs; others have lost assistance from parents who have lost jobs. Some, like the example above, had planned to go home but cannot, and need a place to live. Eligible expenses include rent, furniture, utilities, food, medical and dental expenses, transportation, childcare and clothing. One student who tested positive for COVID-19 requested assistance with food and other necessities; another requested help with rent, food and medication to treat ongoing medical issues.
Students have been thankful for the support they have received through the Student Emergency Fund. One said, “My parents sent me to school, on my own, in hopes that I would not only obtain a degree, but that I would be taken care of and provided the things I need to succeed. It makes me feel valued that even in these tough times where my family isn't able to help me, that the institution, and this board of funders has caught me from falling and for that I will be forever grateful. As a result of the pandemic, I have fallen on tough times and am extremely appreciative that UAlbany granted me funds. As a student who has been extremely active and involved in the campus community, I am grateful that things like this exist. I am happy to be a Great Dane because not many institutions, especially public, provide this kind of support. If there ever is a time that you all might need me, please don't hesitate to reach out. Being awarded this money really warmed my heart.”
Another used the funds for rent and food. S/he said, “I received the emergency aid grant and am very thankful. This grant has helped me feel secure during the pandemic since I am not working and live off campus to attend school. This grant has paid for my rent and allowed me to feel comfortable having a roof over my head while I now spend my last semester. I am extremely appreciative of the gift card as it helped me buy groceries. This pandemic of Covid-19 has been very hard on everyone and it is very nice to see the school giving back to the students. I truly appreciate all that you are doing. Thank you so much!"
