Capital Trio and A Book of Hours - Jan. 29
Popular in the Medieval and Renaissance periods, books of hours were varied handmade volumes (no two are alike) built around a set of eight devotional texts with personal elements in between: art, psalms, illuminations, lessons, decorative elements, music, etc. — anything to increase the meditative purpose of the printed work. Our resident piano trio dives into the mind of composer, Williams Matthews, and explores the different angles of his contemporary piece, A Book of Hours. With movement titles such as Catbird at Matins, Evensong/Uneven Song, Fish Fry and ‘Round Midnight—a tribute to jazz legend Thelonius Monk—Matthews’ work is his personal answer to a modern devotional text.
