Vav, Hey, Daled, Gimmel. So begins the Hebrew alphabet, a close
cousin of the ancient languages of Phoenician (a form of Greek)
and Moabite. It's based on the written Hebrew from old Hebrew texts,
and as such is the only speech in the world based on a written language.

Alphabet
- The Alphabet of Art
The Alphabet of Art was developed by the late Robert J. McKnight,
a sculptor, designer, and theoretician of art. McKnight believed
that the historical development of communication systems paralleled
the development of the senses in the individual. Just as a newborn
child orients itself to the world first by touch, then hearing,
and only later by eyesight, so objective systems of communication
developed in that order. First came the numerical system, based
on our fingers and the sense of touch. Next came the alphabet, based
on our sense of hearing. McKnight saw the evolution of a visual
notation system as the next logical stephence the Alphabet
of Art.
Alphabet
- The American Sign Language Guide

first announced that deaf people could be taught to understand written
symbols by linking them to the things they represented. In 1620,
his theories about teaching sign language to deaf people using a
manual alphabet were first published. Today, American Sign Language
is the fourth most used language in the United States. Learn it
online!
Alphabet
- The Greek Alphabet
Did you know that the Greek alphabet may be the ancient ancestor
of all major European alphabets today? Recent archaeological discoveries
show that this alphabet was in use beginning around 6,000 B.C.,
and rapidly spread around the countries that made up the area we
call Europe today. Learn the Greek alphabet and how to pronounce
each letter online.
Alphabet
- The Hawaiian Alphabet
The Hawaiian language originated in central and eastern Polynesia.
In 1820, Western missionaries helped the islanders turn their verbal
language into a written one. In less than a decade, they became
one of the most literate people on earth. But the overthrow of the
Hawaiian monarchy in 1893 by a white provisional government meant
that their language could no longer be taught in schools. Learn
more about this fascinating tongue.
Alphabet
- The Russian Rules of Pronunciation
The Cyrillic alphabet is used in several eastern European languages,
including Russian, Serbian, Bulgarian and Ukrainian. The unique
characters that make up this alphabet are attributed to St. Cyril,
who was sent from Greece by Emperor Michael III to Christianize
the Khazars. View these characters and learn how to pronounce them
at this detailed page.

Atlas
of Cyberspace
This is an atlas of maps and graphic representations of the geographies
of the new electronic territories of the Internet, the World-Wide
Web and other emerging Cyberspaces.
These maps of Cyberspaces - cybermaps - help us visualize and comprehend
the new digital landscapes beyond our computer screen, in the wires
of the global communications networks and vast online information
resources. The cybermaps, like maps of the real-world, help us navigate
the new information landscapes, as well being objects of aesthetic
interest. They have been created by 'cyber-explorers' of many different
disciplines, and from all corners of the world.
Some of the maps you will see in the Atlas of Cyberspaces will appear
familiar, using the cartographic conventions of real-world maps,
however, many of the maps are much more abstract representations
of electronic spaces, using new metrics and grids. The atlas comprises
separate pages, covering different types of cybermaps.
