The Caldecott Medal was named in honor of nineteenth-century English
illustrator Randolph Caldecott. It is awarded annually by the Association
for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library
Association, to the artist of the most distinguished American picture
book for children.

The Valley of the Shadow Edward L. Ayers (University of Virginia)
has created almost 4,000 pages of digitized newspaper articles,
transcriptions of the 1860 Census, tax records, registries of free
blacks, compiled service records for both Union and Confederate
soldiers, and VRML battle maps. Viewers can create their own "histories"
by comparing fragments from diaries, articles in newspapers, and
the 1860 Census report.
